Most people traveling Interstate 80 through Battle Mountain, Beowawe, Carlin, and Elko see gold mines, open desert, and mountain ranges. What many don’t realize is they’re also passing through one of the most productive geothermal regions in the United States.

What Is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal energy is electricity generated from the Earth’s natural heat. Deep underground, water is heated by hot rock and brought to the surface through wells. That heat is used to generate electricity before the water is returned underground to be heated again.

Because the Earth’s heat is constant, geothermal power can produce reliable electricity day and night, making it one of the most dependable forms of renewable energy.

Benefits of Geothermal Energy

One of geothermal energy’s biggest advantages is reliability. Unlike solar panels or wind turbines, geothermal power plants can generate electricity 24 hours a day because they use the Earth’s natural heat instead of depending on sunshine or wind.

Geothermal facilities also have a relatively small surface footprint compared to many other energy projects. Most modern plants recycle the water they use by pumping it back underground, helping preserve the geothermal reservoir. They also produce very low greenhouse gas emissions during normal operation, making geothermal one of Nevada’s important renewable energy sources.

Things to Consider

Like any energy source, geothermal development comes with challenges. Building a geothermal power plant requires years of geological studies, exploration drilling, permitting, and significant investment before electricity is ever produced.

Not every drilling project discovers enough underground heat to support a commercial power plant, and geothermal resources are only found in certain parts of the country. During construction, nearby communities may experience temporary increases in truck traffic, drilling activity, and equipment on site.

Modern geothermal projects are also carefully monitored to help protect groundwater, wildlife, and surrounding public lands while balancing renewable energy development with responsible environmental stewardship.

Northern Nevada is uniquely positioned for geothermal energy because of its Basin and Range geology, existing electrical infrastructure, and decades of experience developing natural resources.
